Oh the Wisconsin history that has passed beneath that old burr oak.

It was growing on the ridge between the lakes in 1832 when the Army chased Chief Black Hawk and his band through the four lakes area.

It was there in 1836 when land baron James Doty platted the city of Madison and promoted it as Wisconsin's new capital.

It stood at Mifflin and Carroll streets as Bascom Hall was built. Union troops returning from the Civil War rallied beneath it. The smoke of the 1904 fire that burned the Capitol wafted through its branches, as did tear gas and marijuana smoke later in the 20th century.
