The First European Machine Tool Convention, "Towards Recovery" took place in Cernobbio on Lake Como, Italy, last October. Italian Machine Tool Association's (UCIMU) president, Flavio Radice said the convention was called to formulate a response to President Clinton's February 1992 manifesto calling for an increase in public sector aid to manufacturing production technology research. Representatives of 187 companies from 12 European Community (EC) countries met to hammer out a common strategy for the European Machine Tool Industry.
