CHICAGO _ A lot of injuries are bad; a few can be crippling. That appears to be the case for the Boston Red Sox with the knee injury that forced catcher/team leader Jason Varitek on the disabled list.
Varitek went out July 31, the same day management was getting barbecued for failing to answer the New York Yankees' addition of Bobby Abreu with a deadline trade or two of its own. And the Red Sox would win only two of their next nine games, including a five-game losing streak to Tampa Bay and Kansas City.
