Readers of this newspaper won't notice today's retirement of Cliff Behnke, the senior managing editor of the Wisconsin State Journal.
His is a behind-the-scenes job. He oversees the newsroom, manages the budget and coordinates efforts with other departments that help produce the paper.
More important, though, has been Behnke's role, in 40 years at the newspaper, in guiding ethics and enforcing standards through the daily tumult.
