UNTIL now "A Subtreasury of American Humor", published in 1941, has been the bible. For 50 years many publishers have toyed with the idea of a new anthology good enough to compete with it. But prospective editors have demurred. However much they needed the money, they have paled at the idea of trying to read everything published in America that is thought to be funny.
So no one with any heart is going to give a bad review to the brave author of "Russell Baker's Book of American Humor". They will seek to find nice things to say.
