Aug. 15--Vera O'Lear's thin body is succumbing to cancer, but her spirit remains as strong as ever.
The 82-year-old Stockton resident is a patient at Hospice of San Joaquin, a nonprofit organization that makes end-of-life health care and patient comfort its personal responsibility. The care comes to patients, whether they are on grounds at the residential Hospice House or in their own homes.
The organization is in the midst of a yearlong celebration of 25 years of service to the community. Since 1982 it has providing skilled nursing and support to more than 10,000 terminally ill patients and family members combined.
