Defending champion John McGowan had won 12 of his last 13 matches in tournament play over two years heading into Sunday's second round of the St. Charles Men's City Tournament.
With Mark Pawelski carding 4 birdies and sitting at 3-under-par after 14 holes, McGowan's run came to a crushing halt at Pottawatomie Golf Course.
Pawelski won the match 5-4 to advance to Saturday's championship flight semifinals against perennial contender Ron Shoger, a 5-3 winner over Russ Davis.
