Aug. 12--Deep in the Mogollon Rim Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest, one of the most technically sophisticated ground-based telescopes of its size has begun to take shape.
Less than a year after crews broke ground in Happy Jack, the Discovery Channel Telescope, with its thick concrete and steel beams wrapping around the future base of the telescope have formed the skeleton of the base for the telescope.
The $40 million Discovery Channel Telescope is being built by Lowell Observatory with $10 million in funding from the Discovery Channel. The project still lacks at least one more major backer.
