Aug. 15--LOWELL -- The latest head count from the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that Lowell and other Massachusetts cities have been hemorrhaging population since 2000, but Mill City officials say not so fast.
At issue is the American Community Survey (ACS) program, scheduled for official release today, which is providing the first look since the 2000 Census at demographic and social data for all areas with 65,000 or more residents. Census takers estimated that Lowell had a household population of between 89,000 and 105,000 last year, with a midrange of 96,876. The 2000 Census calculated that figure at 101,326.
