If voters approve Lane County's first-ever income tax for public safety in November, much of the money will come from wealthy people such as Tim Laue.

An owner and officer with Eugene-based Essex General Construction, Laue and his wife have a combined income that places them among the top 9 percent of wage earners in Lane County.

That top group - though small in number compared with the rest of local taxpayers - contributed close to half of all the money generated by Lane County taxpayers in 2004 for the state income tax, according to state data.
