As Pascal might have said but didn't, the heart has its devices which reason knows nothing of. Research into the most recent of these devices, which are intended to replace the heart completely, was given a large boost on 30 September 1993 when the National Institutes of Health, through its National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, pledged to underwrite the final development of three total, implantable artificial hearts.
The federal government will grant $1.8 million per year over the next three years to each of three research teams to permit them to produce a miniature, electrically powered, tether-free, pulsatile, total artificial heart that will work reliably ...
