IN THIS COMPARATIVE STUDY of the poetic works of Aime Cesaire of Martinique and Nicolas Guillen of Cuba, Kubayanda attempts to reveal the presence of a "collective" Caribbean literary discourse, more specifically a Negritude poetic discourse that goes well beyond the linguistic, cultural, and geographic differences between Cuba and Martinique. He is particularly interested in these poets' preoccupation with the notion of Africa and their quest to rediscover the African heritage in the New World through their poetry.
