First Charlie Gibson became Charles Gibson. Now ABC News is changing the moniker of its signature evening newscast, a call that reflects the net's bid to market itself beyond the 30-minute program.

Starting today, ABC drops "World News Tonight," a name adopted in 1978 with the debut of anchors Frank Reynolds, Peter Jennings and Frank Robinson, and becomes simply "World News With Charles Gibson."

"World News' is no longer just on at night, so the name has caught up with the effort we are putting into it," said exec producer Jon Banner. He and Gibson joined TCA's press tour by satellite from Cyprus.
