Women are twice as likely as men to experience insomnia, the inability to fall asleep and stay asleep, and the reasons may be numerous. Hormones may be partly to blame. A recent survey by the National Sleep Foundation found that roughly 50 percent of women had difficulty sleeping prior to and during the menstrual cycle. Sleep problems can also occur during menopause, when hormone levels fluctuate and eventually fall. "Clearly in menopausal women, the hot flashes have an effect on sleep," remarks Mark P.
