Horse racing commentator and former professional soccer player Essop Moosa has succeeded in a damages claim against the horse racing authority Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Ltd, which he claimed had him unlawfully arrested and detained for trespassing.

Moosa initially claimed more than R1-million in damages, but Judge Aubrey Ledwaba awarded him R50 000.

Moosa told the Pretoria High Court that the horse racing authority caused him to be falsely and maliciously arrested at the Turffontein Race Course on November 29 2003 on charges of trespassing.
