The title and declared purpose of this short book largely belies its content. While the preface points to a "succinct survey" of three centuries of British emigration, the book's concerns are much narrower. Apart from the misnomer, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Indeed, it would be a hard act to follow Eric Richards' recent magisterial and comprehensive survey of British and Irish emigration in his Britannia's Children: Emigration from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland since 1600 (London, 2004).
