THE state government of Ceara gave the order in June for work to start on a Reais 13.15 million ($US 5.9 million) project to introduce a light rail service between Crato, a regional centre, and Juazeiro do Norte, a centre for religious pilgrimage. There is a big travel market between the two cities, which have a combined population of about 400,000.
The 14km line will have six stations, and it is planned to use two air-conditioned LRVs with single or double articulation and a 330 passenger capacity. They would be built locally by Bom Sinal and SMS.
