MELBOURNE, Aug 18 Asia Pulse - Australian stocks have given back some of yesterday's gains to end marginally lower, with gold and resources stocks dragging on the market.

Merger and acquisition activity yesterday pushed the market to a one-month high, but today the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index ended down 3.4 points at 5052.5, while the all ordinaries fell 1.6 points to 5015.6.

At 1617 AEST on the Sydney Futures Exchange, the September share price index contract added 4 points to 5022 on a volume of 14,632 contracts.
