Aug. 19--Maj. Jake Kulzer of Minneapolis and other Minnesota National Guard members aim to make the historic lands in southern Iraq better, if not utopian, by helping the region produce a lot more fresh water.
The soldiers are stationed in an area of the Tigris-Euphrates river valley that was long known as the Fertile Crescent. Some religious accounts say the valley was home to the biblical Garden of Eden.
