Aug. 20--It doesn't appear on their paychecks, but Decatur city department heads get a perk for driving, even if they do not drive on the job.
City vehicles are intended to be driven on city business. Three building inspectors, the landfill supervisor and nine Parks and Recreation employees have city vehicles they are allowed to take home. Since 1997, police officers have been assigned their own police cars that they can drive home and back to work. Capt. Ed Taylor said the resulting pride in ownership extends the cars' service life, allows more flexibility with shifts and reinforces the department's presence in the community. ...
