MEXICO CITY - Mexicos president, in a tacit admission that government policies have failed to keep violence contained in Chiapas, ousted one cabinet minister Jan. 10 and created a new commission to deal with the troubled region.
Patrocinio Gonzales Garrido, with tears in his eyes, resigned as Secretary of the Interior, saying "I accept the wishes" of President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
Jorge Carpizo McGregor, attorney general and former head of the National Human Rights Commission, was named to take his place.
