Tourism and retirement developments are booming businesses in picturesque Region B. The region's elderly population grew by 37.5% during the 1980s. A strong drawing card is Biltmore House, the nation's largest private home, which attracts more than 700,000 visitors annually. Luring more service-related and high-tech businesses is a key goal of the region's business leaders, particularly after manufacturing employment slid by 3% during the past decade. Eventual completion of I-26 to the Tri-Cities in Tennessee may be a major economic boost.
POPULATION
The state's population grew 13.61% from 1983 to 1993.
