The annual Greater Los Angeles Auto Show has opened at the Los Angeles Convention Center with organizers and exhibitors hoping for bigger crowds because of an improving economy and a larger facility.

Buoyed by last week's figures showing an increase in auto sales in the U.S., major car manufacturers were upbeat about the opening of the Los Angeles exhibition, which is the first in the country in 1994 and one of the largest in a series of auto shows every year.

In addition, manufacturers this year were able to pull out all the stops in setting up their exhibits because of more space.
