THE 3.03-mile long Tappan Zee Bridge is a major link in the 641-mile New York State Thruway system, spanning the Hudson River 13 miles north of New York City to connect Rockland and Westchester counties. Built as a six-lane bridge in the early 1950s with an estimated capacity of 100,000 vehicles per day, the bridge has seen ever increasing traffic with the growth of Rockland and Westchester counties. It was reconfigured for seven lanes in the mid-1980s by removing the 10-ft median and replacing it with a fixed concrete median barrier. The bridge now averages 113,000 vehicles a day.
