THERE'S a rustic saying which goes: "When you drink from the stream, thank the spring from where it comes."
That might well be the motive behind the altruism of business tycoon John Gokongwei Jr.
That spirit was concretized when he formally announced on his 80th birthday last August 11 he would give away to charity P10.25 billion, half of his shareholdings from JG Summit Holdings.

One of the beneficiaries is his alma mater, the University of San Carlos in Cebu run by religious missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), which will receive R50 million.
