Several outdoor gatherings, one to celebrate Emancipation Day and another that featured a noted evangelist, topped the Elgin news of August 1906. Also making headlines were the actions taken by some disgruntled gold mine investors, the city council's investigation of the chief of police and a rather surprising anniversary greeting that showed that old enemies can be friends again.
