WASHINGTON _ In the jungle, the mighty painted jungle by famed French artist Henri Rousseau, neither man nor beast sleeps day or night.
A self-taught artist, Rousseau's developed a unique artistic style that often blended varying influences and subject matter. Yet, his enigmatic imagery earned little respect from the French art establishment during his lifetime. His singular artistic vision eventually found a much more receptive audience with a talented generation of avant-garde and modern artists in the 20th century.
