It was Izaak Walton who reportedly said, "Yea, eschew all other baits for trout, and try dunkin' a worm."
Like all successful living creatures, trout are blatant opportunists when it comes to feeding. Picture the fish as dainty insect-sipping dilettantes if you will, but ignoring their lust for large protein-rich foods--living or dead--is blinkered thinking. The plain truth is that trout are big-time flesh eaters.
You can, of course, fish minuscule insect imitations and catch trout, and you can do so through the winter into early spring if you know what to look for. Still, meaty offerings are awfully hard to beat in cold water. Or warm water, for that ...
