The historical trend of viewing the work of Scandinavian artist Edvard Munch as nothing but a reflection of his anguished life has resulted in an unbalanced view of the artist and his work. Fortunately, Munch criticism has broadened to consider topics other than the artist's mental disorders and illnesses. Munch's work is now studied in terms of its sociohistorical context, as texts independent of the artist and as true expressionism. Now that criticism has moved beyond seeing Munch's work as a reflection of his physical self, his place in art history will be better understood.
