When Philip Morris Cos. called a news conference to publicize the filing of a $10 billion lawsuit against ABC Broadcasting a few weeks ago, the action escalated the bitter confrontation between tobacco companies and their critics. Philip Morris charges that ABC repeatedly accused the company of lacing cigarettes with extra nicotine to make them more addictive. Philip Morris denies the reports as false and reckless. "The ABC reports were the straw that broke the camel's back," says PaineWebber analyst Emanuel Goldman. "The press conference marks a new approach, a more public response by Philip Morris to all the bashing."
