THE hole in the ozone layer discovered 20 years ago appears to have stopped growing, according to top US scientists.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the level of ozone-damaging gases called chlor of luoroc arbons (CFCs) was decreasing following efforts to highlight the crisis.

But they said it would probably be about 60 years before the ozone layer, which blocks harmful ultra-violet rays from the sun, would be back to normal and that was dependent on climate change.
