For the Northwestern University Settlement Assn. in Chicago, good news began with a phone call from Seattle. The caller, a representative from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, eventually gave the community organization $1.4 million to help it start two charter schools on Chicago's West Side.
The schools, opening today on 1337 W. Ohio Street and 4121 W. Cortland Ave., are the second and third of the organization's planned network of seven charter schools in Chicago. Without money from the Gates Foundation, "it probably would have happened, but it would have taken longer,'' says association President Ron Manderschied.
