DAMASCUS, Syria _ Syrian President Bashar Assad agreed Sunday "to use his influence" in the Middle East to determine the whereabouts and health of two abducted Israeli soldiers, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said after meeting with the president for nearly two hours in the People's Palace.
The capture of the soldiers sparked the 34-day war that left more than 790 Lebanese and more than 150 Israelis dead.
"The folly of war was never more apparent than in the last war," Jackson said after the meeting.
