The object of this short article is to present a previously unnoticed macaronic lyric. The lyric--an aphoristic, moralizing piece of verse--has not been recorded hitherto in the Index of Middle English Verse, nor is it listed in Ringler's bibliography. (1) The Latin part of the verse has popularly been associated with St Bernard, and is cited in William Langland's poem The Vision of Piers Plowman, but cannot actually be traced to any of the known writings of the saint. (2)
The lyric is found on the verso of an otherwise blank page in a sammelband in Exeter College, Oxford. (3) The shelfmark of the volume in question is 9.M.4815. (4) The volume has an early ...
