But IBM, Others Ready to Vie for Lead in Affordable Dictation
PC voice-recognition packages are popping up faster than you can clear your throat. But when it comes to taking continuous, error-free dictation, many vendors' products are rendered, well, speechless.
However, Steve Longmire, president of Speak Easy Systems, argues that not only PCs, but PC users, are unready for oral data entry. Most people we tested couldn't dictate faster than 25 words a minute, and correcting mistakes or making changes was even more time-consuming, Longmire said. At any rate, he added, the best PC-based dictation systems are cost-prohibitive.
