Aug. 29--They came forward in droves to do what they could. People from churches, schools, disaster relief organizations, the National Guard emergency organizations from all over Monterey County joined the nation to help victims on the Gulf Coast devastated by the winds, rains and floods of Hurricane Katrina a year ago. In the two weeks following the storm, 22 families who came to Monterey County from the hurricane-ravaged region were assisted by the Monterey-San Benito Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross, said Lynda Maguet, director of disaster services for the chapter.
