I find Grace Paley where she said I would, at the end of a dirt road behind the volunteer fire barn--a distant cry from the New York neighborhood where she grew up, but, somehow, a plausible domesticity. Grace and her husband Bob are sitting at the kitchen table after lunch. I have brought a strawberry sour cream pie from Maine. Ribbons of steam rise from the Connecticut River, as Grace and I retreat to her study to talk about her New and Collected Poems and the relation of politics to art.
Joann Gardner: You're basically known as a story writer. Where do the poems fit in?
Grace Paley: Well, I wrote poetry for years before I wrote stories. I began to be ...
