Aug. 30--It started with a rat. Scads of them, actually.
Ann Rich called the Tribune about an infestation of the critters in her back yard. Her call was forwarded to a reporter just starting a new column.
The next day, the newly dubbed Problem Solver contacted Chicago's Bureau of Rodent Control. City crews responded. They cleaned up the alley behind Rich's Lakeview home and set traps in her back yard.
On Aug. 31, the Tribune published the results: Bureau of Rodent Control 1, rodents 0.
And What's Your Problem was born.
