RESTLESS LEGS syndrome (RLS) is significantly associated with depression in renal transplant recipients, according to data presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Toronto. Screening for and treatment of depression should be considered in renal transplant recipients with RLS.
The finding suggests that depression and RLS may be linked by common neuropathologic mechanisms, or that sleep disturbances associated with RLS may mediate symptoms of depression in renal transplant patients.
