The recent concerns over the health risks of hormone (estrogen) replacement therapy (HRT) for the management of menopausal symptoms has created great uncertainty in the minds of many women, probably justifiably so. As a consequence, HRT usage has declined worldwide. (28) The main symptom associated with the menopausal change is hot flashes, and a number of herbal treatments can help relieve this often debilitating problem. The most proven of these is the root and rhizome of black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa or Actea racemosa), although the quality of the clinical trials to date has been questioned. (29)
