In the age of xerography the arrival of a manuscript in an editor's mail is not a particularly notable occasion. There is always heavy daily traffic through that "In" box (and "Out"). For all that, I still retain a distinct impression of my receipt in early September 1986 of the manuscript of Paul Auster's fourth novel, In the Country of Last Things, at my office at Viking Penguin, where I was a senior editor. Why would that be? His fine agent Carol Mann would have written a hortatory cover letter and may even have called me up to prime me for its arrival, but these are standard operating procedures.
