ST. LOUIS _ When Chris Carpenter starts a game for the Cardinals, they have almost a three-in-four chance of winning that game. Ponder that in this age of National League parity-mediocrity (choose one), where every team but a couple seems to be a .500 club.
Righthander Carpenter made his 87th career start for the Cardinals on Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates. His 3-1 victory in a spiffy 1 hour and 54 minutes was the Cardinals' 63rd in those 87 games for a club winning percentage of .724. Carpenter himself is 49-16 (.754) as a Cardinal.
But his numbers against the Pirates are the most staggering. In 11 career ...
