Sep. 2--LA SALLE -- They have strange names. And they look even stranger. These are not your common spuds. But they are potatoes -- specialty potatoes with names like Russian Banana, French Fingerling, Rose Finn Apple, Purple Peruvian, Purple Majesty and Yukon Gold. They are being grown, harvested and marketed as Rocky Mountain Gourmet Potatoes by Strohauer Farms of La Salle. It's the second year Harry Strohauer has grown potatoes that range from about the size of a finger -- which is why some are called fingerlings -- up to 4.25 inches in diameter.
