Sep. 3--This year's attendance at nine state-operated historic sites is comparable with last year, but this season visitors spent more money, Wisconsin Historical Society officials said. That's good news for the sites, which are owned and operated by the society. It indicates their finances might be stabilizing while operating costs are increasingly paid by revenue from the sites rather than with state funding. Total attendance at the sites through Aug. 27 was down 2.6% from the same time last year, according to Historical Society figures. That represents an overall decline of about 3,000 people for this season.
