Sep. 3--VICTORVILLE -- When officials stopped an armed and dangerous parolee at large without a form of identification a few weeks back, the predicament of determining his real identity was nothing new for law enforcement.

For decades, crooks have tried to avoid jail time by providing authorities with false names. New technology is helping to control the problem through a mobile fingerprinting system, but officials said it is still common for individuals to be booked into jail under an alias.
