The year 2003 ushered in revisions of the two intelligence scales most commonly used in determinations of giftedness--the Stanford-Binet (Roid, 2003) and the Wechsler Scales (Wechsler, 2003). Both scales reflect changes that go beyond simple item updates and new norms; there are refinements in the conceptualization of intelligence and corresponding changes in item subject matter. Because of these changes, use of these new tests may influence the number and type of students that are determined to be eligible for gifted programs.
