The second hospital built in Tennessee, Johnson City Medical Center (known then as Memorial Hospital), opened on May 10,1911, with 10 beds and a staff of three nurses. Small though it was, it meant a great deal to the area residents, who no longer would have to travel many miles for their health care. Eighty-seven years later, it would also give rise to the Mountain States Health Alliance.

Based in Johnson City, Tenn., MSHA is relatively new as far as healthcare organizations go. It was formed in 1998 when the medical center acquired six Columbia/HCA hospitals in northeast Tennessee.
