Evidence-based practice is the foundation of health care today. Translating research into practice is not a new endeavor but rather an expansion of past efforts to produce best practice guidelines for appropriate patient care, using information from experts and evidence from empirical research. (1) Perioperative nurses demonstrated their desire to use evidence-based practice when they first questioned "sacred cows," or actions that are performed because of historical precedence even though there is no evidence of their effects on patient outcomes.
