The Colorado Division of Wildlife confirmed Wednesday that four greater sage grouse died of West Nile virus in northwestern Colorado this summer.
Previously, the division had reported only one greater sage grouse death in 2004 linked to West Nile.
"It wasn't a surprise because scientifically we were aware that grouse were susceptible to West Nile virus," said Tony Apa, division sage grouse researcher.
