Hold on. While European automakers were watching Chinese and Indian brands try to enter eastern European markets, another upstart entered the battle.

Last month, Iranian carmaker Iran Khodro started building its cars in Belarus for sale in eastern Europe. No, it's not the Paykan, the iconic Iranian car developed from the Hillman Hunter.

Instead, in Belarus, Khodro is assembling the Samand, a sedan derived from the Peugeot 405 that went out of production in western Europe in 1995.
